As the winch cable pays out, we hear a ratcheting sound which is not made by a freespooling planetary winch. And the only way for the cable to stay tight with 2 men on it would be if it was locked, or spooling under a load. If it was freespooling as the plot indicates, it would immediately spool out slack as soon as the first man's weight went onto it.
