At the end, when Nero's ship begins to collapse and be drawn into the black hole, Kirk and the Enterprise should have departed the area immediately. At that point, Nero's fate was sealed, and there was no point in the Enterprise firing on his ship or watching the beginnings of its destruction by the black hole. Kirk is guilty here of what pilots call "target fixation", and it nearly got Kirk and his crew killed as a consequence.
