As the two ships are lifted from their resting places, each of them is secured by one strap at the bow and one strap at the stern. Lifting a boat in such a manner would place an extreme stress along the keel that would certainly cause it to break in half and fold inwards. In fact, that is exactly how the second boat meets its demise when it is rested in the water.
