Judging by the boys' heights as they cross the train-trestle, the river bed is only about 40 feet down, not a hundred as one of the boys states. Given the perspective from the top of the trestle, and the nature of young men to exaggerate, the discrepancy could be put down to innocent youthful aggrandizement.
