Anti-ship missiles would have required a radar system "paint" the USS Stennis with its radar before firing. This would have been detected not only by the Stennis itself, but also by the picket vessels surrounding it and the early warning aircraft flight overwatch. That "painting" would have been an early warning of an impending missile strike and the carrier would have taken defensive maneuvers as a result.While it is possible that a missile might struck the carrier, the early warning would have made it impossible for more than a single missile to gotten through to the vessel.
