Despite being a relative short walking distance from the walls surrounding the state nature preserve where The Village is located ( less than 20 miles or so) no external noises are ever heard. This includes gunshots, motor vehicles being operated or even music.
Any one who has been in a rural area knows (or learns) that sounds travel for miles. There is no way short of technology not shown in the film or living underground that this can be stopped.
