After the mid-air collision and the decision to turn back to JFK, Nicolas Cage's character begins rummaging through the First Officer's clothing. The Captain begins tossing items towards the rear of the cockpit and he rejects them for his use. It's highly doubtful that a pilot, let alone an experienced captain on an international route would want all that cockpit FOD, foreign objects, scattered about the cockpit.
