Throughout the series Major Houlihan exerts military authority, going so far as to take command in one instance. As a woman in the early 1950's she would carry no command authority other than that within her duties as a nurse. She is also a stickler for military courtesies, demanding unquestioning respect from subordinates while showing little to none for those who outrank her save for those who could possibly help her advance in her career.
