The book, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, shows a print date of 1871. In the opening vignette, Buster and the other gunmen in the story are armed with Colt Model P revolvers. Otherwise know as Colt SAA or the Peacemaker. This revolver did not go into production until 1873. Interesting though, is that the gambler (surly Joe) who draws on Buster, is correctly armed for an 1873 Colt SAA with a 5 1/2 inch barrel and bulls eye ejector rod. This would have been the black powder frame SAA.
