The film essentially ends with the understanding that the aliens have been completely destroyed and the threat to humanity has been eradicated. However, numerous downed alien ships are still relatively intact, and there would certainly be many surviving aliens among their gigantic ships -- probably thousands of survivors. It wouldn't be long before they exited these ships and continued a ground war against humanity -- one sure to be costly regardless of outcome.
