Through the movie they are using a C.B. radio during the day. CB's are unusable throughout the day because of "skip"; signals bouncing off the ionosphere, it would be like a crowd of people with flashlights in a house of mirrors. Skip is completely incoherent noise and is strong enough during the day to make communications over a distance of more than about 2 miles (3Km) impossible.
