Old man Blanchard claims that they've reopened the mine and let the creatures out, but then claims there are tunnels leading to all the houses of the town, thus the creatures wouldn't have needed anyone to reopen it to start attacking people. Also the idea that the miners would have dug tunnels to all the houses is not very believable at all given what a huge and expensive effort that would require with very little or nothing to gain in doing so.
