When Grace rides to the town, it is a fortress by a river. She approaches from the top of a hill towering over the castle. For very good reasons, fortifications were not built on low ground, ringed by higher vantage points. No matter how thick the walls, attackers would simply fire into the stronghold from above, with defenders unable to fire back because of the angle.
