Soviet submarines rarely received names. The eight Lira (NATO reporting name Alfa) class submarines were rather referred to with their pennant numbers (e.g. K-123). The Akula (NATO reporting name Typhoon) class submarines did not receive names until they were part of the Russian navy, well after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
