The Mars Recovery vehicle is shown pointing forward before it attempted to go into orbit. Any spacecraft would have to point backwards, and thus slowdown, to enter orbit.
Correction - space vehicles do not need to turn around to decelerate. Engineers design them so such a maneuver can be accomplished without losing your forward view by adding rockets to the front of the craft. There are 6 on the space shuttle.
