Given Esperanzo easily escaped, killed the pilots and recovered the hidden radio under the cockpit panel (for which he had been given a code-name to use), it can be assumed him capturing the plane was part of the plan all along. Therefore, they could have simply agreed to divert the plane to a private airfield for example without having to take over the entire airport, killing people and using all that expensive equipment.
