When McClane is on the wing of the 747, Stuart opens the overwing door outwards. Doors on planes always open inwards, because of the pressurization of the cabin. If the doors opened outward, it would be very easy for there to be a malfunction or an accident to happen with the door blowing out. With the door opening inward, the door is pressed up against the frame so it is impossible for the door to open in-flight.
