(at around 21 mins) The shadow of the approaching ship moves up the face of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial, indicating the ship is moving from the front to the back of the Memorial and therefore away from the mall. The next shot shows the shadow moving toward the Washington Monument obelisk at the other end of the mall. In effect, the ship's direction has completely reversed.
