Using a nuclear bomb as a reference, if a 4 kiloton bomb were to go off, everything within a radius of 1.05 miles would be incinerated. The blast would would demolish concrete buildings at a distance of 2.78 miles. With the climb rate of a Bell 222 helicopter being 1,600 feet per minute, it would take 9.2 minutes to reach that altitude. People would receive third degree burns (charred flesh) at a distance up to 15.2 miles. It would take over 50 minutes to reach that altitude.A Bell 222 helicopter can travel at a speed of up to 149 miles an hour. The Vatican is 13 miles from the sea. It would take about 8 minutes to cover that distance. By going up instead of flying towards the sea, the devastation would be far worse. Flying straight up makes for far greater drama, especially considering the renaissance portrayal of the heavens is reflected in the clouds after the explosion, but it is far from being a reasonable course of action.
