Chip Hardesty's narration refers to the murder of a newspaper publisher, who is seen as Klansmen break up his office, beat him, and threaten to drown him. They throw their still-living victim into the back of a truck and climb in with him - at which point the Klan-robed drivers lock the back of the truck and reveal themselves as FBI agents Hardesty and Crandall. Who would have a lot of explaining to do if the publisher was in fact murdered by the suspects they just locked him up with.
