When one flight crew member leaves the flight deck on a US carrier, there must be a procedure in place to assure that no one is able to enter the flight deck when the door is opened. This will most certainly involve a flight attendant, who blocks the door (sometimes using a beverage cart), while the crew member exits. The Flight Attendant will then enter the cockpit and wait for the pilot's return. This way, the flight attendant can verify the pilot's return visually and can open the door to allow them in. This would not be possible if the remaining pilot was left alone, as he is forbidden to leave his station and leave the aircraft with no one at the controls to verify the identity and to open the door.
