M rides with Bond to the German checkpoint. Bond is briefed and given a cover identity. When they arrive at the checkpoint, M gets out along with Bond, then gets back in the car and is driven away. M was in full view of all the security cameras at the checkpoint and, as it can be assumed that the East German intelligence has a good idea who M is - or at least that he is affiliated with MI-6, this blows Bond's cover.
