An earthquake in California would not be felt on the North American east coast, even if a magnitude of this size were possible. For example, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake was of magnitude 9.0, and shaking was felt 2500 km (~1600 mi) away, while the distance from California to the east coast is almost twice that, at 4800 km (~3000 mi).
