Zod tells Jor-El that he refuses to coexist with the people of Earth to avoid years of suffering trying to adapt. Although he had trouble in Smallville when facing off Superman, he was able to adapt to the surface when he arrived at the deserted Kryptonian ship. Not to mention the other Kryptonians were able to use powers while wearing their exosuits at the farm and during the battle of Smallville.
