The ship can repair itself but only if its operator presses a button. Why wouldn't it always repair itself? It needs the operator to press the button, but it won't let the operator press it if the operator is injured? Who came up with THAT design? It's a very clumsy plot point to require Adult Adam to bring Young Adam along.However, safety measures must have been taken to prevent competitors to commandeer a ship along with preventing an injured pilot to jeopardize a jet by fainting while flying. Furthermore, a technician could well bypass the security and have access to it when parked at the facility.
