Harvey Milk è omosessuale, è laureato in matematica e lavora presso una Società di Investimenti a Wall Street. A un soffio dagli anni Settanta e dal suo quarantesimo compleanno, Harvey incontra e ama (per sempre) Scott Smith. Trasferitisi a San Francisco con un sogno di amore e di emancipazione, Harvey e Scott aprono un negozio di fotografia nel quartiere Castro.
