A Dublino nel 1932, Christy Brown, appena nato, è vittima di una paralisi che gli impedisce di parlare e di muoversi: i medici al riguardo esternano pessimistiche previsioni sulla possibilità di sopravvivenza di Christy che, malgrado questo handicap, viene ben accettato da tutta la numerosa ma povera famiglia, composta dal padre muratore, dalla madre casalinga e da dodici fratelli. Con il trascorrere degli anni Christy sorprende i familiari per i suoi tentativi di comunicare con il piede sinistro, tramite il quale riesce a scrivere alcune parole e a dipingere.
