Figlio primogenito del potente Odino, Thor è destinato a salire al trono di Asgard ma la sua foga e il desiderio di affermarsi in battaglia lo spingono ad un'azione avventata che, non fosse per l'intervento salvifico del padre, rischia di mettere a repentaglio la pace e la sicurezza del suo regno. Affranto per la delusione procuratagli dall'inadeguatezza del figlio Odino decide di scagliarlo sulla Terra, privato dei suoi poteri e impossibilitato ad usare Mjolnir, il suo micidiale maglio. Almeno fino a che non sarà in grado di usarlo con giudizio. Caduto nel nostro mondo il dio nordico si imbatte, nel vero senso della parola, in un gruppo di ricercatori che indagano i curiosi eventi atmosferici che hanno luogo nel New Mexico e in particolare in un'astrofisica dal sorriso facile. Intanto nel regno di Asgard il fratello Loki approfitta di un malessere del padre per salire al trono.
