Alexandra, una scrittrice di romanzi di avventura con milioni di bambini che seguono i suoi libri da tutto il mondo, in realtà è una donna molto insicura che non esce mai di casa e che ha paura del mondo esterno con il quale entra in contatto solo attraverso il suo computer. Quando un giorno una sua piccola fan le scrive una e-mail per chiedere il suo aiuto in qualità di "esperta delle avventure pericolose" per ritrovare il suo papà scomparso in circostanze misteriose su un'isola sperduta, Alexandra mette da parte le sue paure e trova il coraggio di uscire di casa scoprendo così che là fuori, sull' isola sconosciuta a tutto il mondo, che non risulta in nessuna cartina geografica, c'è un mondo segreto popolato da creature meravigliose assai più bello di quello fantasioso dei suoi libri.
