Sui bastioni di Elsinore, Amleto vede apparire lo spettro di suo padre, che gli rivela di essere stato assassinato dal proprio fratello Claudio, in accordo con la regina, madre di Amleto. Il giovane principe simula la follia per mettere a punto la sua vendetta. Per far questo abbandona la sua fidanzata Ofelia, che diventa pazza. Nel corso di un duello con Laerte, fratello di Ofelia, Amleto viene ferito da una spada avvelenata.
