Da poco arruolato e in partenza per il Vietnam, Claude dell'Oklahoma arriva a New York e in Central Park incontra un gruppo di hippy che stanno bruciando le loro cartoline di precetto. Incuriosito, li segue ed è coinvolto in incidenti con la polizia. George, capo dei manifestanti, è scambiato per lui e spedito in guerra dove muore. Dal musical (1967) di Gerome Ragni, James Rado (libretto) e Galt MacDermot (musica), definito “America's first tribal love-rock musical”. Precedette Oh Calcutta (1969), Jesus Christ Superstar (1971), The Rocky Horror Show (1973). È un film di regista, non di coreografo (Twyla Tarp): il suo ritmo non è scandito dai numeri musicali, ma dal montaggio che costruisce i balletti. Diretto dal cèco Forman, da due anni naturalizzato americano, ha un tono disincantato più che raffreddato: sintesi storicizzata dei ribollenti anni '60, celebrati come l'Era dell'Acquario e della contestazione giovanile
