E' l'autunno del 1957, ad Hartford, Connecticut. La famiglia Whitaker è una delle più in vista delle città: il marito Frank è il capo di un'azienda che fabbrica televisori, la moglie Cathy è una perfetta casalinga, i due figli sono dei simpatici bambini pestiferi. Ma la situazione non è così esemplare come sembra: Frank è in realtà bisessuale, e tradisce la moglie con uomini scovati in bar equivoci; Cathy, dal canto suo, sconvolta per aver scoperto le tresche del marito, si lega in affettuosa amicizia con il suo giardiniere di colore, subendo l'ostracismo della comunità: è costretta a fare una scelta, comunque dolorosa.
