In un viaggio di trasferimento sulle autostrade del Nebraska, Burt, un giovane medico con la sua compagna Vicki investono...il cadavere di un ragazzo. Burt accerta subito che l'infelice è stato assassinato a coltellate. Del criminale nessuna traccia nella sconfinata pianura coltivata a "mais". Sulla base delle reticenti e nebulose informazioni del gestore di una pompa di benzina, la coppia arriva attraverso i campi ad una desolata e vuota cittadina, quella di Gatlin, dove regna un silenzio surreale. E' qui che, poco a poco, Burt e Vicki scopriranno una orribile verità...
