Giovani semiproletari italoamericani di Brooklyn vivono in funzione del sabato sera per ballare in discoteca la disco-music. Al di là del ponte c'è Manhattan, la terra promessa. Tony Manero, uno di loro, fa coppia con un'impiegata con cui vince una gara di ballo, ma rilutta a un impegno affettivo più profondo. Amaro dramma realistico travestito da commedia musicale? Forse. In ogni modo il diffuso malessere di una gioventù senza ideali né prospettive (se non quella del ballo come trampolino di lancio e di evasione) è raccontato con una certa sincerità. All'attivo del regista c'è la sagacia con cui ha saputo esprimere l'erotismo di Travolta. Coreografia di Lester Wilson, musiche dei Bee Gees. Stallone diresse il fiacco seguito Staying Alive.
