Ambientato nella Miami degli anni 80, l'intreccio si dipana tra il mondo degli immigrati cubani e quello dei signori della droga della east-coast. Tony Montana, lo sfregiato, è uno tra i tanti "rifugiati politici" in territorio statunitense, sbarcati sulle coste della Florida in seguito all'apertura delle carceri cubane. Per i profughi la via più veloce per abbandonare la degenza economica è darsi al crimine, e Tony, non certo uno stinco di santo, non ci penserà due volte. Comincerà così per il gangster una rapida ascesa, che arriverà a vertiginose quanto pericolose altezze.
