Il professore di lettere Johnny Smith (Christopher Walken) cade in un lungo periodo di coma in seguito ad un incidente stradale. Al suo risveglio non solo comprende che la sua vita sentimentale è irrimediabilmente distrutta (la sua fidanzata Sarah, l'ultima persona che vide prima dello scontro, si è nel frattempo sposata), ma scopre di possedere un oscuro e inquietante potere, che gli consente di predire il futuro di tutte le persone con cui entra in contatto fisico. Una semplice stretta di mano, ad esempio, genera improvvise visioni nella mente dell'uomo, che sa anticipare con assoluta certezza eventi drammatici e anche tragici che stanno per colpire la persona che ha toccato. Questa sua facoltà lo conduce ad affrontare alcuni episodi spaventosi.
