Nel 1880 un colonnello della cavalleria americano è fustrato perché non può inseguire i predoni apache oltre il confine messicano. L'ufficiale è sposato e ha un figlio, ma da quindici anni non vede la famiglia perché durante la guerra civile è stato costretto a bruciare la piantagione della moglie, simpatizzante sudista, e questa non l'ha più perdonato. Ora, però, scopre che suo figlio si è arruolato nel reggimento e ben presto giungerà la moglie per riaverlo indietro. Il colonnello riuscirà infine a sconfiggere gli indiani, a riappacificarsi con la moglie e a scoprire che il suo ragazzo è diventato un uomo, mentre la banda suona Dixie, l'inno del Sud. Terzo film della Triologia della cavalleria di Ford. Nonostante alcuni lo ritengano il meno riuscito, costituisce un'indimenticabile rassegna di personaggi e un'ottima ricreazione dell'atmosfera militare come era stata dipinta dal pittore Frederic Remington. La pellicola è una specie di seguito de Il massacro di Fort Apache
