Jack è un ex-poliziotto diventato tecnico del suono. Facendo esperimenti per i suoni di un nuovo film capta accidentalmente i rumori di un'automobile che cade in un torrente. Recatosi sul luogo dell'incidente riesce a salvare Sally, ma non il conducente, governatore dello Stato e candidato alle elezioni presidenziali. Ascoltando a casa il nastro registrato, Jack si accorge che in sottofondo si sente il rumore di uno sparo. Capisce allora che non è stato un incidente ma un omicidio, al quale la polizia non crede. Jack e Sally continueranno l'indagine da soli.
