Un gigantesco treno merci senza macchinista è lanciato a folle corsa attraverso i boschi innevati dell'Alaska con a bordo una coppia di evasi. Manny (Voight) è già scappato due volte di galera. È per questo che Ranken, il direttore del carcere di massima sicurezza di Stonehaven (in Alaska), l'ha tenuto gli ultimi tre anni in segregazione. Manny però non si arrende e riesce a evadere di nuovo, questa volta attraverso le fogne, in compagnia di Buck (Roberts). I due riescono a salire su un treno in partenza vuoto. Ma il macchinista muore poco dopo la partenza per un infarto, lasciando così il treno senza guida, lanciato a folle velocità contro un impianto chimico Konchalovski è nato a Mosca ed è emigrato in America. Qui, su soggetto di Akira Kurosawa, filma un'epopea sulla libertà e la violenza, giocando su personaggi allegorici sostenuti da attori come macigni. Superbo il finale con il "Gloria" di Vivaldi.
