Fin da ragazzo, il giovane Wyatt apprende dal padre Nicholas Earp il rispetto della legge ad ogni costo ed il senso della famiglia. Dapprima emigra coi suoi fratelli (James, Virgil, Morgan e Warren) in California, quindi si stabilisce nel Missouri dove studia legge e sposa un'amica d'infanzia, Urilla, che gravida, muore di tifo. Sconvolto, Wyatt si da' al bere, ruba, e finisce in galera, da dove lo fa uscire il padre. Divenuto cacciatore di bisonti, assume come scuoiatori i fratelli Masterson; poi riuniti i fratelli a Dodge City, diviene sceriffo e fa amicizia con Doc Holliday.
