Quando "9" nasce si ritrova in un mondo post apocalittico in cui la razza umana è estinta. Ed è solo per puro caso che egli incontra una piccola comunità di altri esseri (gli altri 8) che, come lui, vivono cercando continuamente rifugio da spaventose macchine che si aggirano sulla terra con l'obiettivo di distruggerli. Pur essendo l'ultimo arrivato, 9, capisce che nascondersi non è sufficiente e che se vogliono sopravvivere devono passare all'azione scoprendo, in primo luogo, perché le macchine malvagie sono così disperatamente motivati a distruggerli. Presto scopriranno che il futuro della civiltà è proprio nelle loro mani.
