L'universo di Harold Crick, agente del fisco, viene sconvolto quando inizia a sentire una misteriosa voce narrante che fa la cronaca in diretta della sua vita e che solo lui è in grado di sentire. La misteriosa narratrice è Kay Eiffel, una scrittrice in declino che sta scrivendo il suo ultimo libro che, per puro paradosso, è proprio la fedele descrizione della vita di Harold, ormai completamente guidata dalle parole dell'autrice. Ad aggiungere disagio al povero Harold è anche il tragico destino che Kay ha in mentre per l'eroe del suo libro. Il 'protagonista' a questo punto cerca conforto nell'aiuto dell'eccentrico dottor Jules Hilbert e tra le braccia di Ana Pascalo, una delle 'vittime' dei suoi controlli fiscali. Le cose si mettono ancora peggio quando Harold, ribellandosi al testo del romanzo, cerca in tutti i modi di sopravvivere tanto da indurre l'editore del libro ad assumere un killer per portare a compimento l'opera...
