Colpita da una meteora, la Luna rischia di andare letteralmente in pezzi e colpire, a sua volta, la Terra. Allarmata da repentine anomalie climatiche e da alcuni grossi frammenti lunari che piovono dal cielo, la dottoressa Lana Gale - figlia di un noto scienziato che, inascoltato, aveva previsto un simile evento - tenta di mobilitare i vertici dell'American Space Institute affinché studino un piano per implodere il colossale squarcio della Luna. Riuscita a convincere anche lo scettico Victor Stevens, senza il consenso del quale non si potrebbe mettere in atto alcuna operazione, Lana convoca John Redding, il più esperto demolitore di edifici disponibile sulla piazza, e lo convince ad imbarcarsi sul nuovissimo shuttle "Perseus" per minare la fenditura con cariche nucleari...
