Dopo una serie di incontri casuali con un misterioso portiere, Albert Markovski decide di rivolgersi a Bernard e Viviane Jaffe, i "detective esistenzialisti", che indagano sui misteri profondi delle esistenze dei loro clienti. I due investigatori mettono così in luce il rapporto conflittuale tra Albert e Brad Stand, giovane e rampante dirigente dell'Huckabees, popolare catena di grandi magazzini.Quando anche Brad ingaggia i Jaffe, Albert perde fiducia in se stesso fino a quando non si allea con la conturbante filosofa francese Catherine Vauban.
