Anno 1950. Eilis Lacey, una giovane immigrata irlandese si fa strada nella Brooklyn degli anni ‘50. Attratta dalla promessa dell’America, Eilis lascia l’Irlanda e le comodità della casa materna alla volta della costa di New York. L’inibizione iniziale dovuta alla nostalgia di casa scompare rapidamente con il coinvolgimento in una relazione che catapulta Eilis nel mondo affascinante e inebriante dell’amore. Presto però questo entusiasmo viene spento dal suo passato e la giovane si trova a dover scegliere tra due paesi differenti e le vite che essi comportano.
