Marzo 1943, orfanotrofio St.Clouds nel Maine. Wilbur Larch, fondatore dell'Istituto e medico abortista, ci narra la nascita del piccolo Homer Wells. Il bambino abbandonato diviene il pupillo di Larch che lo avvia alla pratica ginecologica. Homer è anche il braccio destro del medico nei confronti dei giovani ospiti fino a quando arrivano Wally e Candy. Lei deve abortire ed Homer comprende che se seguirà la coppia potrà finalmente allargare i propri orizzonti. Lascia quindi l'orfanotrofio e finirà con il legare con Candy mentre Larch tenta di riaverlo al suo fianco.
