Liam è il più esperto tra gli artificieri della polizia di Boston. Un diabolico terrorista irlandese in guerra con la Corona e con il mondo intero, niente Ira, solo sacro furore. Liam crede che il demonio e il passato siano definitivamente sepolti. Si sbaglia. Il compagno d'un tempo ha deciso di rovinare le sue gesta eroiche, con contorno di vanità da primi piani televisivi e si impegna a far saltare come birilli colleghi artificieri e famigliola in cerca di felicità sulle note degli U2. Jeff Bridges si impegna come sa e come può per contrastare la contorta e raffinata mente criminale di Tommy Lee Jones, impegnato a costruire giocattoli mortali per il trionfo del reparto effetti speciali. E il fuoco divampa, ovunque, lasciando dietro di sé odore di zolfo, come si addice alle apparizioni luciferine. Anche se tutto appare un po' troppo pretestuoso e costruito, i giochini funzionano per merito dei due antagonisti e di un cast di tutto rispetto.
