Il sergente Stryker (Wayne) è al comando di un plotone di reclute dei marines. Per i suoi modi di addestramento brutali e violenti è odiato da tutta la truppa. Stryker è un soldato che sa quanto valga un buon addestramento per affrontare una battaglia. È per questo che chiede il massimo ai suoi uomini. Questi se ne accorgeranno durante lo sbarco a Iwo Jima, dove scopriranno il lato umano del loro sergente. Classico film di guerra incentrato sulla figura del soldato tutto patria e spirito di corpo (un efficacissimo Wayne). Il film alterna alla finzione veri brani documentari dello sbarco a Iwo Jima, compresa la sequenza della bandiera.
