Nella notte tra il 14 e il 15/11/1959 due giovani, Perry Edward Smith e Richard Eugene Hickock, usciti di carcere in libertà vigilata, fidandosi di una vaga informazione relativa all'esistenza di una cassaforte in casa di un agricoltore, si dirigono ad Holcomb, la città dove questi vive con sua moglie e due figli. Nella notte, penetrati nella casa, dopo aver cercato invano il denaro, Smith ed Hickock uccidono l'intera famiglia per nulla. Il 30 dicembre sono arrestati. Rei confessi al processo, sono giustiziati il 14/4/1965. L'anno dopo Truman Capote pubblicò il romanzo-documento, costato sei anni di lavoro, che gli diede la fama.
