Londra, estate 1593. Un giovane Shakespeare a corto di ispirazione, impulsivo e alla ricerca del fuoco dell'amore per dare vita alla poesia del teatro. Una ragazza figlia di ricchi borghesi, Viola De Lesseps, trascorre le notti a sognare i versi di quello Shakespeare artista della penna e di poter un giorno far parte di una compagnia di teatro, vietato alle donne. Alle audizioni per trovare un Romeo a una commedia non ancora scritta, dopo una desolante schiera di aspiranti, un giovane sconosciuto recita un sonetto con tanto sentimento che lo stesso Shakespeare lo rincorre fino a villa De Lesseps per sapere di lui. O meglio di lei, che travestita da uomo e aiutata dalla fedele balia, voleva coronare il sogno di calcare le scene.
